Christians in English Language Teaching Conference 2009 Denver

Where will the conference be held?  Central Presbyterian Church, 1660 Sherman Street

How to get there from the Colorado Convention Center (location of TESOL convention)?

Walking: it’s a “relatively safe” nine-block walk, taking about 15 minutes.

Public transit: Take the free MallRide shuttle, with a few blocks’ walk on either end.

Driving: One-way streets and expensive parking make this not a great option.

Details:

Downtown Denver is a very pedestrian-friendly area, with a good public transportation network of buses and light rail (www.rtd-denver.com).[1]  The bus running on the 16th Street Mall in the center of the city is a free shuttle (www.rtd-denver.com/specialrides/mallshuttles/). The Colorado Convention Center where TESOL is being held is two blocks southwest of 16th Street. All of Denver’s light rail lines pass by the Colorado Convention Center Station at 14th and Stout. Central Presbyterian Church is just a couple of blocks from of 16th Street at 1660 Sherman Street. Although public parking is available near both the church and the Convention Center, the parking is fairly expensive. Since the public transportation system is so easy and reasonable, we suggest using it instead of driving personal cars.

From the Colorado Convention Center to Central Presbyterian Church by public transit:

-       Leaving the convention center from the entrance with the Big Blue Bear, walk two blocks northeast to 16th Street.

-       Anywhere along 16th Street, catch the 16th Street MallRide shuttle bus. This bus is free, and you want to take the bus going east (to the right).

-       Ride the bus to the end of the mall. This is Civic Center Loop at the corner of 16th Avenue and Broadway.

-       From this corner, walk two blocks to 16th Avenue and Sherman Street.

-       At Sherman Street, turn left (north) and the church will be a half-block up on the right-hand side of the street.

Notes:

The public transit route to the church should take 15 minutes or less.  The shuttle runs "frequently" especially during rush hours.  The shuttle's hours are:

M-F 5:00 am to 1:35 am, Sat 5:30 am to 1:35 am, Sun 7:00 am to 1:35 am

From the Colorado Convention Center to Central Presbyterian Church on foot:

-       Leaving the convention center from the entrance with the Big Blue Bear, walk two blocks northeast to 16th Street.

-       Turn to the right and walk 2-3 blocks and turn left on Court Place.

-       Walk one block on Court Place to Broadway.

-       Cross Broadway and make a slight right on 17th Avenue.

-       Walk up 17th Avenue 3 blocks.

-       At Sherman Street, turn right (south) and the church will be a half-block down on the left-hand side of the street.

Note: this is relatively safe area, but as in all urban areas, it’s best not to walk alone.

If you do decide to drive, the directions are a bit more complicated because of central Denver’s one-way streets.

-       Pass the Big Blue Bear on your right on 14th Street.  Continue southeast on 14th to Court Place.

-       Turn left onto Court and go three blocks to Broadway, passing under a glass bridge on your way.

-       At Broadway, make a slight right onto East 17th Avenue.

-       Go two blocks on 17th Avenue to Sherman Street.

-       Turn right onto Sherman Street, and Central Presbyterian Church will be on your left.

Returning from Central Presbyterian to the Convention Center by car:

-       Go south on Sherman Street to East Colfax Avenue. The Colorado State Capitol will be in front of you at this intersection.

-       Turn right onto East Colfax and follow it past Civic Center Park where it jogs slightly right and then left again.

-       Continue on Colfax (now West Colfax) for seven more blocks (past 14th Street) to Speer Blvd.

-       Turn right on Speer Blvd. and go one block to Stout Street.

-       Turn right onto Stout and go one long block to the Convention Center at 14th Street. The Big Blue Bear will be on your right.

[1] Note that Denver’s downtown streets are angled and do not run due north, south, east and west.  Just east of Broadway (where the church is), the streets do run due north, south, east, and west.  Note also that numbered streets in Downtown Denver are “Streets”, whereas they are labeled as “Avenues” outside of Downtown.  Thus, 16th Street and 16th Avenue are two different roads.
